For starters, Sony apparently has not yet officially confirmed the name of the console. According to Wired’s story, the console is being referred to as a “next-gen console” by Mark Cerny, the Lead System Architect for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) as well as its upcoming successor.
Through the article, Mark has confirmed that the new PlayStation will be powered by a custom 7nm AMD Ryzen CPU, alongside a Radeon GPU that will also be based on the company’s 7nm Navi architecture. Mark also stated that the chip will support ray-tracing and a maximum resolution of 8K. The chip also contained a section specially reserved for 3D audio that developers can take advantage in order to deliver immersion to their games. The new console will also come with an unknown type of solid-state drive (SSD) that will apparently have a higher bandwidth than any currently available SSDs for the PC.
If you have a huge collection of PS4 games and also owned PSVR headset, worry not as the new PlayStation console will continue to support them. In fact, some new games will be made available for both PS4 and the next generation PlayStation console during their release later. However, it is going to be sometime before you are able to get your hands on the new PlayStation though as it will not be released within this year.
