Upon review, upcoming voters may then confirm the records or rectify any errors or changes. The commission says that if you no longer reside at the address on your IC and wish to vote at a different location, then you will have to update your address with Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara by 31 October at the latest.
There will be two ways for you to review your information if you’re still unregistered within this period; you can go to the EC’s website at the link here to check online, or you can go to one of 594 SPPA review centres nationwide and scan a QR code on site. The SPPA review centres include EC offices, post offices, government buildings, land and district offices, community halls, and many more. The news comes after the Kuching High Court ordered the federal government to implement the lowering of the voting age to 18 by 31 December, after five Sarawakian youths filed a judicial review. The suit was caused by the EC’s announcement back in March that Undi18 and automatic registration would not be implemented until next year, despite initially promising to deliver by July 2021.
Law minister Wan Junaidi revealed last week that both Undi18 and automatic registrations would become a reality by year-end, assuring that the government would not appeal the high court decision. Two years after successfully passing the law to lower the voting age, it seems that Malaysia’s youth will finally be able to have their voices heard through the ballot box.
