The decision came following an informal Twitter poll that CustomizeMyPlates conducted. The company asked its followers whether they will back a petition or a GoFundMe campaign to get Sony Interactive Entertainment to allow the company to make custom plates legally. VGC reports that the company is pushing forward with the crowdfunding model. But on the flip side, the company did not say if it had resolved the legal problems with SIE to begin with.

They said “There will be tons of companies making these faceplates and Sony will be powerless to stop them”. They also argue that, while the Japanese console maker can fight counterfeit controllers via firmware, there’s no mechanism of the sort to prevent custom faceplates from being made and used.
